Kate, nickname for Katherine or Catherine, often punning on âcate,â a choice morsel or dainty.
1) Shr, nickname for Katherine Minola, used almost exclusively by Petruccio. His first use of it (2.1.181 ) is considered an impudence by her as it is too familiar. He plays on âcate,â (2.1.188â89 ) and âcatâ (2.1.271 ), and as in much early Sh., the joke goes on far too long. Even Gremio gets into the act: âPetruccio is Ratedâ 3.3.117. 2.1.188, âKate Hallâ: possibly Petruccio means that Kate is held in such repute that the Minola home has acquired her name.
2) LLL 4.3.80, see Catherine 1).
3) 1H4, 2H4, see Percy, Lady.
4) H5, Henry's affectionate term for Catherine of France.
5) MM, see Keepdown, Mistress Kate.
6) Tmp 2.2.48, common woman in Stefano's drinking song who staved off sailing men with a strong tongue (a suggestion of Petruchio's Kate in Shr? ) but who had a weakness for tailors.
7) H8 2.4.130, affectionate nickname that Sh. has Henry VIII use in intimate conversations with his wife, Katherine of Aragon. Sh. ignores the fact that Henry treated Katherine roughly when she opposed his decision to end their marriage. There was a prospect of war with the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (Katherine's nephew) if Katherine refused to recognize the divorce. Though Henry seems to have held affection for Katherine and his daughter Mary, Anne Boleyn arranged a number of humiliations to which Henry acquiesced.
Katherina, variation of Katherine, Shr 1.1.52, 100; 1.2.98, 123; 21.1.sd, 43â4, 181.sd; 5.2.7 Usually used to accommodate the meter, though it also appears in the stage directions. See Minola, Katherine.

2) LLL, see Catherine.
3) H5, see Catherine.
Katherine of Aragon, H8, (1485â1536), Henry VIIIâs first wife and mother of Queen Mary. Katherine was the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. At the age of 16 she was wed to Henry VTIâs 15-year-old son, Arthur, the heir to the English throne. Arthur died five months after their marriage. Henry VII was reluctant to return Katherine's dowry and to lose her as a tie with Spain, but he did not know how to justify keeping her in England. Since he was recently widowed, he flirted with the idea of marrying her himself. The plan was unacceptable to her father, who preferred a union with the new heir to the throne, Arthur's brother, Henry. Henry VII was not initially enthusiastic about the idea. The validity of a marriage between a man and his former sister-in-law could be questioned and doubts raised about the legitimacy of their children. Such suspicions could imperil the future of a dynasty. Although Katherine claimed that Arthur's youth and ill health had prevented the consummation of their union and that, therefore, no valid marriage had taken place, English authorities insisted on a papal dispensation to permit her to wed Henry. Julius II issued the required documents on 26 December 1503, but Henry did not marry Katherine until 11 June 1509, two months after he had inherited the throne. He may have been urged to this step by his dying father who regretted the way Katherine had been treated.
